THE HONEY RIVER: Enhancing Honey Value Chain Productivity In Uganda

On the 15th of September, students from University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi) gathered at Bugema University to participate in the International Student challenge geared towards “Enhancing Honey Value Chain Productivity in Uganda”. This is a program under the AgrGROW Project that gathered partnering higher learning institutions in a Problem -Based Learning (PBL) collaborative learning ecosystems (CLE) approach.

Students were challenged to identify the challenges encountered in the honey value chain and provide solutions to these challenges. due to this call, different stakeholders were engaged including, policy makers, farmers, breeders, processors and distributors. these included, ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), The Uganda National Agricultural Development Organization (TUNADO), Kiboga beekeepers, Mac Bee Honey Processing Company, Malaika Honey, among others.

After gathering data from the field, students engaged in vigorous analysis and interpretation of the data to understand and derived solutions to improve honey value chain in Uganda.

This two week long activity was concluded physically on the 27th of September with presentation of findings and a sneak preview through the solutions derived. The participants are to present their creative solutions virtually in the following month.
